Formation 2023, pencil & watercolour on paper, 90cm x 90cm framed
This artwork was exhibited in the invitation-only, Kedumba Drawing Prize 2023. ‘Formation’ draws inspiration from the liminal zone at the threshold of rock and water and the cyclical relationship of these elements in flux. Channels are created as water moves around rock, while the powerful weathering action of waves and tides erodes and shapes rock formations over eons. This work was created through addition, subtraction and layering, initially drawing with masking fluid and applying a wash of watercolour before removing the masking fluid to reveal a gestural response to geological forms. Subsequent layers of detailed pencil drawing aimed to bring focus to the circular composition while retaining a sense of dynamism.
