FLG is delighted to be presenting the new artworks by Kim Anderson, Annika Romeyn & Richard Blackwell for this year's Sydney Contemporary Art Fair.

This year our three exhibiting artists come together to explore the concept of traversal - of navigating both the ecological and technological challenges that face contemporary society. Within each body of work the physicality of the human form is rendered small within a vastness of scale and notions of movement and negotiation are rendered as complex and challenging.

I’m drawn to the threshold of land, sea and sky, of rock and water – contrasting forces in constant interaction. Recalling the humbling and restorative experience of walking in nature, my work speaks to the monumental presence of eroding and enduring rock formations, and the many turbulent moments that they help us to weather. I live and work on Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country in Kamberri/Canberra and I’m a grateful visitor on Yuin Country on the NSW South Coast. Guarella/Guerilla Bay is a powerful and personally significant place that continues to captivate and surprise me. My 'Endurance' series is grounded in the ancient rocks of Guarella/Guerilla Bay, but departs from the physical reality of this place, to move beyond the horizon and into the intangible blue of distance.

I am fascinated by the physical manifestation of grief and anxiety associated with climate change and the decimation of fragile ecosystems. My drawings are based on photographs I take of myself physically interacting with rugged, isolated terrains in a solitary performance that oscillates between reverence, mourning, despair and solace. This interaction is witnessed only by a camera lens, and then translated into drawing through a lengthy process of meticulous, emotionally-laden mark-making.

My work creates an account of the experience of living and interacting in our current social reality. That experience itself is the result of countless phenomenological interactions and relationships that are mediated by technology, ideology and the concrete structure of the built environment. As a result my work is a network of objects, a combination or a collage of marks, observations and processes, parsed by technological systems and personal systems of labor. As experience is mediated by personal desire so is the work. In this sense, equally connected to the external, the work attempts to take note or be aware of my own desire to make art as production, and so reflect my experience of the world in my work.
