Artist Profile

Combining printmaking, drawing and watercolour processes, Annika Romeyn creates intricate and immersive works on paper that convey her experiences of being in the landscape and bear witness to the power, fragility and dynamism of nature. Slow journeys on foot, and by water, have resulted in an enduring fascination with complex and dramatic rock formations - humbling reminders of elemental forces and geological time.

In 2025-26, Annika Romeyn travelled to the Antarctic Peninsula, a long-held dream to experience and respond to this unique remote environment. Her upcoming exhibition 'Flux' in October 2026 will delve into this impactful experience, including watercolour monotype prints and paintings, alongside a selection of sketches from the journey.

I combine drawing, printmaking and painting to create intricate and immersive works on paper. Through my practice, I aim to evoke a sense of place, and to convey the humbling and restorative experience of walking in nature. I am consistently drawn to the threshold of rock and water, where striking reminders of geological time intersect with daily, seasonal and climatic changes. Circling back to place by revisiting the same site from multiple perspectives, or over multiple days or years, I engage in processes of seriality and layering to suggest the accumulation of experience, memory, perception and personal significance.

Often scaling my work in relation to my outstretched body, and frequently using my fingertip as a mark-making tool, I seek to embed a sense of care and value in the environments I depict, through time and touch. My choice of limited colour is considered and symbolic. For example, my ‘Endurance’ series centred on the environment of Guarella/Guerilla Bay, Yuin Country, South Coast NSW - a place that holds memories of meaningful time spent with my immediate family in the last summer of my mother’s life. In this body of work, blue came to signify emotion, memory and distance. More recently, in ‘Wana Karnu’ 2024, burnt orange tones were transferred directly from rusting steel, inviting a natural process to inform and disrupt my drawing, while referencing the interaction of iron, oxygen and water in the environment of Mutawintji National Park, Barkindji and Malyangapa Country, Far West NSW.

Artist CV

Annika Romeyn is a First Class Honours graduate from the Printmaking and Drawing Department of ANU School of Art and Design with an impressive career marked by numerous awards, residencies and commissions. Notably, she received the Mandy Martin Art and Environment Award in 2023, after having secured the Open Cut Commission through the Broken Hill City Art Gallery in 2022. Her recent accolades include being awarded the River of Art Prize (2024), the Burnie Print Prize (2021) and in 2020 she won both the Fisher’s Ghost Art Award and the National Works on Paper Award.

11th International Printmaking Biennial Douro, Museu de Região Flaviense, Chaves, Portugal.

She has been a finalist in such prestigious competitions as the Goulburn Art Award 2026, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery’s National Works on Paper Award (2024, 2020), Eckersley’s Art & Craft Prize 2025, the Pro Hart Outback Art Prize (2024), M16 Drawing Prize (2025, 2023, 2021, 2018, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2012), the Ellen Jose Award (2022), the Swan Hill Print & Drawing Awards (2026, 2022), the prestigious John Leslie Art Prize (2022, 2020, 2018, 2014), the Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award (2021), the McClelland Contemporary Watercolour Award (2021, 2018), the Burnie Print Prize (2021, 2019, 2013), the Megalo International Print Prize (2020, 2019), the Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award (2019), the Commendation Prize for the Banyule Works on Paper Award (2019), and the Gippsland Print Award (2017, 2015).

In 2025 Romeyn exhibited at Shepparton Art Museum in 'The Shape of Things to Come', 'Material Nature' at the Drill Hall Gallery, Canberra and 'Seasonal Shifts' at Town Hall Gallery, Boroonara Arts, Melbourne.

Her work was included in 2023, 2020 2018 International Printmaking Biennials, Douro, Museu de Região Flaviense, Chaves, Portugal. Flinders Lane Gallery exhibited a series of major works at Sydney Contemporary, Carriageworks in 2022.

In 2020 Romeyn exhibited in 'Earth Songs' Gippsland Art Gallery. In 2019 her work was included in 'Of the Sun' at Goulburn Regional Gallery and she was the recipient of a Craft ACT Residency at Corin Dam in Namadgi National Park.

From an initial residency in 2011 at Megalo Print Studio, ACT, Romeyn has travelled extensively across Australia participating in Artist Residencies in Bathurst, NSW, Mornington Peninsula Shire, Victoria, Broken Hill, NSW, and Moorooduc, Victoria. In 2016 Romeyn participated in a studio Residency with Robin Eley, Los Angeles, USA.

She was the winner of the FLG Emerging Artist Award in 2014. In 2013 she was commissioned to create a unique work for the Print Council of Australia.
