“I have been fascinated by the interplay of light and shadow from the foliage around our garden, particularly at sunrise and sunset. In the mornings, as the sun rises, it casts a shimmering display through the wisteria, and in the evenings, it casts a moodier orange light through the tangled branches and vines on the Western side of the house. It occurs to me that each moment will never be repeated exactly, as the earth tilts incrementally on its axis, and the sun rises and sets from a fractionally different position on the horizon day by day.
Observing the changing of the seasons, the shifting shadows, and the expanding and then shrinking arc of the sun makes me acutely aware of the passing of time and our transience on this planet. This enormous ball of fire, our nearest star, has dictated our human rhythms for millennia. As it slips below my horizon, it rises on another.”
