CONTEMPORARY ART STOCKROOM Gina Kalabishis
The paths we take
2025, oil on linen, 91cm x 61cm In Artist's Studio
Feathers entwined, the galahs huddle beneath a lush canopy—graceful and vulnerable. In The Paths We Take, Gina Kalabishis paints a layered vision of love, fragility, and shelter. These birds are both subject and symbol: messengers of a vanishing world. Their vibrant forms fade gently into a landscape muffled by greys and ghosted branches—a reminder of the environments slipping through our fingers.
Bachelard’s “desire paths” run through the heart of this work: the intuitive, improvised routes we carve through life, often without foresight. The galahs become avatars for the choices we make—individually and globally—as we navigate ecological collapse and looming threats such as H5N1.
Kalabishis’ intricate brushwork and emotional palette beckon us to choose new routes forward. Tenderness, urgency, and consequence pulse through every feathered detail.
