Statement:
A private space set aside for exclusive artistic activity
of the highest order or, in another framework, a space
that operates as a factory with meeting production
quotas and completion deadlines.
A
space that allows one to exercise control and experimentation
all under the banner of research new outcomes, innovation
and shifts in practice, all geared towards the new
and extraordinary.
A
place for selection, rearrangement and making choices
across a range of materials, technical processes and
methodologies in harnessing the best possible outcome.
A
space to look and observe, contemplate, sit and consider
or perhaps most importantly apply the blowtorch of
criticism. Severely edit, start a new work, this one
isnt going anywhere, leave it and return to
it tomorrow; a place for failure and success.
A
building or room with many items, objects and things:
tools, materials and equipment. Clusters, forming
from by-products and more things: off-cuts, stencils,
used sandpaper, adhesives, old paint containers, scrap
materials, drawings and more things. Shall we keep
or throw out?
A
place for rearrangement, placement, lifting, carrying
and cleaning. One is physically active moving about
particularly in a sculpture studio.
Likewise,
so is the condition of noise: cutting, grinding, hammering,
gluing and sanding and ABC National playing in the
background all make for an enriching environment and
stimulating environment; never fixed always in flux.
