| Luxuriant expedition stems from my interest in the exploration of romantic explorer Ludwig Leichhardt who travelled from Moreton Bay, Queensland, to the doomed Victoria Settlement on Cobourg Peninsula, Northern Territory, arriving in 1845. Originally developed in 2006 using layers of drawing, watercolour, relief printing and stencilling of manuscript fragments, in 2010 I additionally overlaid the paper works with images from 17th century German scholar Johann Zahn. Zahn was known for his development of the camera obscura and the telescope, optical instruments which conjure unique perspectival visions. In merging historical visions and sensibilities, I have foreshadowed assumptions about the yet unknown, literally projecting darkness onto the land through the screened layers of acrylic glass. I want to bring forward the notion that the country of the north is imbued with forces beyond the fathomable. I indulge in such possibilities once entertained, albeit centuries ago. By bringing the past into the present, I unleash sensations which create the image itself, beyond the control of the explorer, or indeed, the painter. |
