 | | Horstmans'
luminous wall sculptures dazzle with fast lane intensity. Informed by the stylistic
principles of geometric abstraction and finished in bright bold colour, this new
series of interior & exterior wall sculptures irreverently gesture toward
the lure and appeal of speed. Concerned
with creating new volume and momentum with line, light and shadow, Horstmans’
sculptures bridge the space between the two and three dimensional with their suggestions
of velocity and space. There is an illusionistic quality to these works as form
and subsequent shadow interact with one another to create a further, non-material
layer of complexity within the sculptural form. As
lines leave the safety of the wall plane, traversing out into the room, an awareness
of a more complex spatial domain is articulated. The play of shadows thus created
calls into existence a potential inverse zone, beyond the wall, that is now opened
out and activated. This
spatial sensitivity is suggestive of an architectural awareness informed by his
years involved in the film and construction industries. Horstmans’ interest
in spatial movement is reiterated with titles such as ‘Super Nova’,
‘Comet’ and ‘Cosmos’ brazenly reflect the artist’s
interest in physics, mechanics and speed. Having previously drawn inspiration
for works from such diverse elements as Klein's mathematical KK Theory and the
styling evolution of 1950s American cars, this new series leaps out into space
with a drive toward flight or free-fall.
Dion Horstmans has just held his first, extremely successful solo show at
Flinders Lane Gallery and is working on a number of commissions. | |
