Jo Davenport
Biography

Jo Davenport’s work explores the intuitive tension between line, colour, text and the natural world. Through a series of mnemonic layers, Jo’s mark-making synthesizes personal narrative with symbolic gesture, creating abstracted ‘maps’ of emotion, time and place. Drawing inspiration from her experiences in the Australian outback, and also from an interest in Eastern aesthetic philosophy, Jo presents a holistic understanding of the world; her maps engage with a passing of time, where memories and thoughts from the artist’s life mingle with those from a larger narrative.

In her more recent works, the artist explores her home environment at Splitters Creek, NSW. These depictions have been painted onto voile, a ground chosen for its translucency, to mimic the optical quality of the river in this area. This translucency suggests the transience of a visual impression of the elusive natural world.
