In
her third solo exhibition at Flinders Lane Gallery
Lilly Chorny presents the full range of her achievements.
Reflecting a critical aesthetic, this new body of
work appears to be drawn from elements of the landscape,
without being limited to a literal comment about landscape
or flora, instead evoking an emotional experience
with nature.
Drenched with a tinted varnish offering a potent combination
of absorbing beauty and alluring illusion, Chorny’s
works point towards Oriental styles. Of her work she
states, “There is an element of abstraction in
oriental art but the essence and rhythm of life and
form is always evident. This is what I am attracted
to and inspired by and of course the use of brilliant
colour”.
Beguiling, surprising, and seductive Chorny paints
a strange universe - another reality that borders
on the fantastic. Throughout this body of work there
is a wonderful duality between the painterly passages,
which have the flow and irregularity of nature, and
motifs of the imagination. With expressionistic over-painting,
these vignettes become enmeshed within the perceived
depth of the painting.
