For his first solo exhibition with Flinders Lane Gallery, Simeon Walker presents a series of works depicting the Australian landscape in all its wonder and individuality. Choosing to focus on isolated elements of the landscape, Walkers ‘portraits’
of red gums and rock formations expresses the artists interest in the power landscape can have upon the psyche. From the unique quality of our light to the textures and forms of our native trees, this exhibition seeks to reaffirm the grandeur and awe of nature.
What one first notices in this artist's work is the striking sense of drama that invites the
viewer to explore these slices of nature. The artist states “The point of interest for me lies where naturally dramatic forms meet the edge of civilized suburbia. It is here where human society is pushing out into the open land to both embrace and eradicate it. I am fascinated with these paradoxes and recurring opposites that define our relationship with the landscape.’’
Questions of mortality, environmental responsibility and a sense of the sacred may also be found in these works.
Simeon Walker was a finalist in the 2005 and 2006 Metro 5 Gallery Art Award, receiving a Highly Commended in the People’s Choice category. His work is represented with the Macquarie Group Collection New York and Melbourne offices. This exposure has led to a series of privately commissioned paintings for senior executives at Macquarie Bank, National Australia Bank, Oxiana and The Boston Consulting Group. His work is held in private collections in the UK, the USA, New Zealand and throughout Australia.
