The
exhibition, 'Plants Dogs Dots & The Spaces Between',
at Upstairs Flinders Gallery is Alizon Grays second
solo show for 2006.
Gray's
practice seeks to explore the materiality and the
substance of paint. Drawing on painterly tradition
she explores various modes of representation and image
making. Each painting is a testing ground where Gray
experiments with the juxtaposition of colour, image,
and material. Through the use of dots, drips, sprays,
brush strokes, and projected image forms begin to
develop and emerge. The paintings within this exhibition
are an investigation into various processes in mark
making and layering to build up rich and lustrous
surfaces through the use of vibrant colour and enamel
paint.
Gray
allows the paint to move and have a force of its own.
As it drips and dribbles over the surface chance must
play its role as it affects the outcome of the painting.
Hence, built into each layer of paint is an element
of frustration, the nature of Gray's process forces
mistake. Much of what is placed on the surface ends
up disappearing under another layer. Yet elements
remain and inform the outcome of the paintings. What
emerges in these works is a stillness and silence
out of the strata of uncertainty and discontent.
Plants
Dogs Dots & The Spaces Between opens on the 1st
and closes on the 14th of September, 2006. This is
an exhibition that explores painterly process, transformation
through becoming and disappearing, ornament in mark
making, and beauty in the abstract.
