Flinders Lane Gallery presents
THE 2008 VCA GRADUATE FLINDERS LANE GALLERY AWARD
Hamish Carr - the waiting room
with music by Christopher L Hill
August 6 - 23, 2008

Opening night: Friday 6 August 6.00 - 8.00pm

This recent body of work by Hamish Carr addresses our relationship to time and the infinite within the context of an evolving landscape. These notions are investigated using concepts adhering to Romanticism and are depicted through the use of installation, projection and sound.

The dialogue exchanged between these mediums reinforces our desire for the infinite. While their interaction is encouraged through the deliberate and somewhat repetitive footage found in the video. Through the rendering applied to this imagery the work begins to suggest notions of data and information that is constantly distorting and changing into objects of representation. Thus, referencing our associations with time found in the landscape.

The materials used in the installation further reiterate references to the landscape and simultaneously act as a point in which to witness its projection. While an intrinsic self-referential element in both the artist and the works reception is achieved through the deliberate placement of the mirror which seeks to place an image within an image. Intertwined within this dialogue is a constant evaluation of our own mortality, in turn continually reminding us of the vicissitudes of our inherent temporality.
