Garry Pumfrey
Obres Noves
Upcoming: 13 November - 1 December 2012
For the past year FLG artist Garry Pumfrey has been immersed in the Barcelona art scene. The resulting body of works entices us to join him in exploring the heart of the old city, Barris Gòtic, Born & Raval.  Barcelona, like Melbourne, is known for its winding lane ways and back street bars. United in darkness, we find Pumfrey drawn to capture these history laden yet clearly contemporary lanes.
Pumfrey presents us with scenes devoid of people but which overflow with evidence of human activity. The paving stones glisten from their nightly hose down, the old style street lamps cast their light onto the graffiti laden & distinctively Iberian shop roller-doors, and the day’s rubbish props against stone walls awaiting pickup. Further down the laneway our eye is drawn to a warm pool of light and a door ajar, a casually propped blackboard tempts us with promises of cerveza y tapas.
There is a slightly sinister edge to these paintings, and yet an undercurrent of warmth and life permeates the canvas. These are not paintings of Barcelona the well-known tourist destination, but rather they offer up a gritty and real local portrait.

Below is an early preview of some of the new paintings for this solo exhibition.
