George Ward Tjungurrayi        
Biography           
 

George Ward Tjungurrayi was born in the area of Kiwirrkurrain in the Gibson Desert c. 1945. He commenced painting for Papunya Tula Artists in about 1976. He painted in different locations, inlcuding Yayayi and Waruwiya outstations of Yamunturrngu (Mount Liebig) and Walungurru (Kintore). At that time, he worked alongside other artists such as Joseph Jurra Tjapaltjarri and Ray James Tjangala.

In 2004, George Ward Tjungurrayi was honoured to receive the Wynne Prize, the prize awarded each year at the same time as the Archibald for the best Australian landscape painting. His work is held in the Artbank collection.
